Well, here is something better than cheap, it's free!
family has a white elephant grab bag instead of a gift exchange each year. White Elephants can be anything. I ended up with this...

Apparently Ester's family has been passing this back and forth for years as sort of a travelling booby prise that keeps coming back disguised in new box sizes and wrapping paper. Well I ended up with her, amongst jeers and laughter.
But I thought she was lovely. When I realized she was made of something really heavy and looking kind of Frank Lloyd Write-ish - art nuevo era I looked it up on line today.
Found the exact same one by a collector/dealer. I sent him an email and asked his opinion. He wrote back, and said I found myself a deal! It's worth about $500 (how nice is that to give me a free estimate!!!)
It didn't have the electrical/lighting (I replaced with a Christmas one-bulb line) and also I replaced the missing glass ball with one of those solar balls like I gave you.
I told Ester and asked if she wanted it back, she said no. It was from her fathers tavern and she has a lot of mementos from it. I told her to look them up to see if they are also worth something. I feel like I should insist that she take it back.... but I really do like it! I'm giving it a place of honor in my home rather than it being in someone's attic.
I know she wouldn't take it anyway.
I guess the moral of the story is...One mans trash is another mans treasure!
